About This School Garden
Flamson Middle School’s Outdoor Classroom began with the visioning of Principal Gene Miller, Teachers John Semenick and Debra Lauridsen, and a group of community members. For a year they worked with students to create plans for an empty plot right next to the newly built main school building. The vision included creating veggie beds, benches, pathways, and a strong focus on native plants used by the indigenous Salinan and Chumash tribes. In Spring of 2012, One Cool Earth joined the team and took charge of making the school’s vision a reality. Funded by a grant from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the SLO County Community Foundation’s Janssen Youth and Youth Sports Fund, the garden consists of 4000 sq. ft. of native plants utilized by Chumash and Salinan tribes as well as raised garden beds, a tool shed, and benches. John Semenick’s Opportunity class, Cal Poly volunteers from WoW and Engineers Without Borders, SLO Permaculture Guild and the County’s Youth In Action group worked hard to make the garden a reality.
