[email protected] Atascadero Middle School, Lillian Larsen Elementary and Georgia Brown Elementary I'm originally from a small town named Sanger, Ca, and moved to San Luis Obispo to pursue my degree in Animal Science. I got involved with marine science by studying sea otter foraging and enjoyed it so much that I pursued a master's degree in Biology, focusing my project on fisheries management and conservation. I fell in love with marine science, but I really enjoy bridging the gap between science and the community, which is where One Cool Earth comes in! Starting at a smaller scale for our future environmentalists and getting them curious about our world in our very own backyard is what I look forward to! If I'm not doing anything marine or garden related, you can find me reading a book, playing with my dog, Zero, or playing soccer with friends! Mary Diemer
[email protected] Winifred Pifer Elementary, Virginia Peterson Elementary and Sinsheimer Elementary Mary grew up in the Bay Area and adventuring in the Sierra Nevada mountains where her love for the outdoors was born. Her passion for spending time outside led her to Connecticut College where she majored in botany with a minor in environmental studies. Thanks to a strong sustainable agricultural program she was able to explore what community farming can look like and how it can help bring people together. After finishing school Mary wanted to bring her love of the outdoors and science to all students! She worked in outdoor education in Yosemite National Park for three years teaching students from elementary all the way to high school all about the geology, biology and cultural history of her favorite national park! A desire to grow some roots and connect back to that community farming background brought her to the beautiful central coast and One Cool Earth! In her free time Mary loves swimming, backpacking, rock climbing and reading. |
Madeline Schechter

Her goal is to work with younger generations to help them create a relationship with the natural world and reduce their impact on it. In her free time she enjoys hiking in the great outdoors, yoga, and cooking meals with local ingredients.

I am pursuing a double major in Child Development and Liberal Studies and plan to become an elementary school teacher. I love working with children and have been a nanny, tutor, camp counselor, and student assistant at the Cal Poly Children’s Center. I am also involved in a club called Sprout Up where I teach environmental science to elementary school students, which cultivated my love for learning about and protecting our environment! In my free time, you can find me at the beach, playing Spikeball with my friends, or scrapbooking. Lorene Silva
Lorene relocated to Atascadero from the Central Valley two years ago. The prior 28 years she worked within the fiscal services department at her local school district. As a teenager she worked at a plant nursery and her desire to learn about horticulture was ignited. Floral design and gardening are what occupies most of her time here on the central coast. Most recently she has been learning about the art of keeping bees and has two hives on her property. Belle Rudd
Belle grew up in San Luis Obispo where she developed her love for the outdoors at a young age. As a kid she loved spending time in the tide pools and watching her dad surf. Her love for the ocean led her to attend college at Point Loma University in San Diego where she majored in Environmental studies with a concentration in social impact. This led her to study abroad in Australia where she studied eco psychology, sustainable agriculture and indigenous land management. These topics have inspired her to pursue opportunities in education and sustainability. She currently works at an organic farm and spends her free time hiking, painting, gardening, and working on creative projects! Heather Walker
Heather has been a nature lover since childhood. Growing up in the Central Valley, she spent countless hours camping and backpacking in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains and in canoes along the San Joaquin River. She spent summers in her teenage years working as a camp counselor at nature education camps. Her curiosity of the inner workings of the natural world led her to study Biochemistry at UC Santa Cruz. She worked in biotech research for 8 years in Santa Cruz, all while living deep in the redwood forest. Following her new career interests, she now lives in San Luis Obispo county pursuing education and experience in herbalism, holistic healthcare, and sustainable farming. She loves to read, practice chi gong, backpack, paint, and play music. |
